Other Financial Support
If funding isn’t quite covering your nursery bill like you want, or you need a little more support, there are additional financial options you can choose.
You will need to apply for these yourself however before doing so, we recommend you use the Children Choices website to make sure you are getting the best deal.
Universal Credit
You may be able to claim back up to 85% of your childcare costs if you’re eligible for Universal Credit.
You (and your partner if you live with them) will usually need to either:
- be working – it does not matter how many hours you or your partner work
- have a job offer

How much you’ll get
The most you can get back each month is:
- £646 for one child
- £1108 for 2 or more children
Please be aware that Universal Credit will only cover the costs of childcare sessions, and not the additional cost of cooked meals.
Universal Credit may adjust how payments are made in future, so please ask our office team for support!
Tax Free Childcare
If you get Tax-Free Childcare, you’ll set up an online childcare account for your child. For every £8 you pay into this account, the government will pay in £2 to use to pay your provider.
You can get Tax-Free Childcare at the same time as 30 hours free childcare if you’re eligible for both.
You can use it to pay for approved childcare, for example:
- childminders, nurseries and nannies
- after school clubs and play schemes
The GBDN is signed up for the Tax-Free Childcare scheme however if you need any official confirmation, such as a headed letter please contact us.
You can check your eligibility for Tax-Free Childcare and find out more information here: Tax-Free Childcare on the Government Website

How much you’ll get
You can get up to £500 every 3 months (up to £2,000 a year) for each of your children to help with the costs of childcare. This goes up to £1,000 every 3 months if a child is disabled (up to £4,000 a year).
