Learning and Assessment

Our setting usually assesses children by our curriculum, however some are assessed differently depending on their needs.

Staff provide opportunities for children to develop skills in the Prime and Specific Areas of the EYFS, which you can see below:

Prime Areas:

  • Personal, Social and Emotional Development
  • Physical Development
  • Communication and Language

Specific Areas:

  • Literacy
  • Mathematics
  • Understanding of the world
  • Expressive Arts and Design

Children learn these skills through a variety of child initiated activities and carefully planned adult led activities using ‘In the Moment Planning’. The children are regularly assessed and activities are tailored to suit their needs. Each child’s development and time at our setting is important and because of this, staff keep parents and carers up to date through daily feedback and ClassDojo; ClassDojo is a secure app that allows both nursery staff, to post photos, videos and messages to the child’s portfolio.

Staff help children understand their own feelings and behaviour and its consequences, distinguish right from wrong, and learn to respect one another. Staff demonstrate sharing of views and encourage children to vote on different actions within the room i.e. themes for role play area, what activity they would like to do, etc.

2 Year Old Checks & Termly Reports

All children receive a baseline assessment within two weeks of starting nursery.

Two year old checks are written for children in Pooh Bears and Rabbits, these are shared with parents and if possible health visitors

Termly reports are written by your child’s key person and shared once a year, usually in the summer term.

SEN children will have review meetings as and when required.

Parents are invited to discuss their child’s progress and development with their child’s key person and the SENDCo (if needed) so that they can discuss which areas their child may be below average in and consequently, their next steps for development.
