What does “British Values” mean?

According to DfE (Department of Education), ‘fundamental British Values’ consist of:

• democracy
• the rule of law
• individual liberty
• mutual respect for and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs, and for those without faith.

The Department for Education (DfE) places a duty on EYFS (Early Years Foundation Stage) providers, schools, colleges and training providers to prepare pupils for life in modern Britain by developing their understanding of ‘fundamental British values’.

At the Gooseberry Bush Day Nursery, we promote British Values during our day-to-day routines in several ways, including (but not limited to):

• We say ‘please’ and ‘thank you’ when we ask for something
• We take turns and share during play and conversations
• We wait for our friends to finish speaking
• We practice our table manners and help set out tables for snacks
